What this value means
NO SUBSTITUTION / NO MONDAYISATION IN FRANCE. This is the single most important rule for this series: French law grants no replacement day when a jour férié falls on a Sunday or on an employee's usual rest day. Service-Public states it explicitly — an employee in that situation 'ne peut prétendre à aucun jour de congé supplémentaire'. Applied to 2026 this bites twice: Assomption falls on Saturday 15 August and Toussaint on Sunday 1 November, and NEITHER is moved. Only a collective agreement (accord collectif) can grant compensation, and that is contractual, not statutory. SECOND KEY RULE: of the eleven days, only 1 May (Fête du Travail) is a mandatory paid non-working day for all employees under article L3133-4; the other ten are 'jours fériés ordinaires' whose non-working status depends on collective agreement or, failing that, employer decision — so this list is the legal holiday calendar, not a guaranteed ten-day closure. MOVEABLE FEASTS for 2026 are computed from Easter Sunday 5 April 2026: Easter Monday = 6 April, Ascension = Easter + 39 days = Thursday 14 May, Whit Monday = Easter + 50 days = Monday 25 May. Whit Monday remains a jour férié but is the customary 'journée de solidarité' day in many firms (work performed unpaid, funding the CNSA) — the day itself is still statutory. DELIBERATE EXCLUSIONS — regional and overseas days NOT in this list: Alsace-Moselle (Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Moselle) has two extra local statutory holidays under articles L3134-13 and L3134-16, Vendredi Saint (Good Friday, 3 April 2026, in communes with a Protestant or mixed church) and the Second Day of Christmas (26 December 2026), giving thirteen days there; the DOM/COM each observe an abolition-of-slavery day (e.g. 27 May Guadeloupe, 22 May Martinique, 10 June Guyane, 20 December La Réunion, 27 April Mayotte) under décret n° 83-1003; and 8 May, 11 November and Saint-Pierre-Chanel-type local days vary in the Pacific collectivités.
