ORTHODOX EASTER, NOT WESTERN: Greek movable holidays follow the Orthodox paschalion, and in 2026 Orthodox Pascha (12 April) falls one week AFTER Western/Gregorian Easter (5 April) - the two must not be conflated. From Orthodox Pascha of 12 April 2026 the movable dates are: Kathara Deftera (Clean Monday) = Pascha minus 48 days = 23 February 2026 (the Monday that opens Orthodox Lent, i.e. Pascha minus seven weeks plus a day); Megali Paraskevi (Good Friday) = Pascha minus 2 = 10 April; Deftera tou Pascha (Easter Monday) = Pascha plus 1 = 13 April; Agiou Pnevmatos (Holy Spirit / Pentecost Monday) = Pascha plus 50 = 1 June. STATUTORY NUANCE ON THE MANDATORY LIST: under Article 60 of Law 4808/2021 the strictly 'mandatory' (ypochreotikes) nationwide private-sector public holidays are a shorter core set - New Year's Day, Epiphany (6 January), Clean Monday, 25 March, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 15 August, 28 October, Christmas Day and 26 December. May Day (1 May) is technically a 'mandatory' holiday only when so declared each year by a Ministerial Decision, which is issued annually as a formality. AGIOU PNEVMATOS (Holy Spirit Monday, 1 June 2026) is a full public holiday for the PUBLIC sector but is NOT on the Article 60 mandatory private-sector list - in the private sector it is a holiday only for banks, public utilities, schools and where a collective agreement or workplace regulation provides for it; it is included above because it is universally observed as an official holiday and is what a holiday calendar for Greece would list. NO MONDAYISATION: Greek law has no roll-forward/lieu-day rule; a holiday on a weekend is simply not compensated. In 2026 this affects no core day badly since most fall on weekdays, but note 15 August 2026 is a Saturday (Dormition) and 25 October has no bearing. Excluded as merely customary or local: Tsiknopempti and other Carnival days, regional patron-saint days (e.g. Agios Dimitrios 26 October in Thessaloniki, Agios Andreas 30 November in Patras), and the second day of specific local feasts - these are local (topikes) holidays, not nationwide. Access: statistics.gr and et.gr refused automated connections from this environment; the statutory basis (Law 4808/2021 Art. 60) and the mandatory/optional distinction were confirmed via KEPEA/GSEE (the trade-union confederation's legal information service) and corroborating Greek labour-law sources. 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-30): fixed dates plus ORTHODOX-Easter feasts computed for Pascha 2 May 2027 (Clean Monday 15 Mar, Good Friday 30 Apr, Easter Monday 3 May, Holy Spirit Monday 21 Jun). CAVEAT — Labour Day: 1 May 2027 falls on Holy Saturday; per precedent (identical calendar in 2021) it is expected to be transferred to Tue 4 May 2027 by ministerial decision, but NO decision has been issued yet, so it is listed on its statutory date. Re-verify around April 2027. Dormition 15 Aug 2027 falls on a Sunday and is not substituted.
