Iceland minimum wage
Whether Iceland has a statutory national minimum wage set by the state. It does NOT. Iceland has no minimum-wage act and no government-set wage floor of any kind. Pay floors are set exclusively by collective agreements (kjarasamningar) negotiated between the union confederations and employers, and are then made binding on EVERY employer and employee in the relevant occupation and area — union member or not — by Article 1 of Lög nr. 55/1980. This series records the statutory null; collective-agreement rates are described in notes and must NOT be served as a statutory floor.
What this value means
POSITIVE NULL, established from the statute, not an omission. The legal architecture is the point: Iceland does not legislate a wage LEVEL, it legislates that PRIVATELY NEGOTIATED levels are universally binding. Under Article 1 of Act 55/1980 the wage and terms in the applicable collective agreement are the legal minimum for everyone doing that work in that area — including non-union members and employees of non-federated employers — and any individual contract on worse terms is void. That is the functional equivalent of an erga omnes extension mechanism, but it produces MANY sectoral floors negotiated by private parties, not one national statutory number. Union density in Iceland is the highest in the world (roughly 85-90% of employees are union members) and collective-agreement coverage is effectively near-universal, so in practice almost no one works without a binding floor. The main private-sector agreements are negotiated by Starfsgreinasamband Íslands (SGS) and the other ASÍ federations with Samtök atvinnulífsins (SA); the state and the municipalities negotiate separately through the State Negotiating Committee and the Municipal Wage Committee; deadlocks go to the Ríkissáttasemjari (State Mediator). The current general-market round is the 2024-2028 'stöðugleikasamningar' (stability agreements), under which wage scales rose again on 1 January 2026 (SGS/SA: scale rates +5.3%, minimum ISK 23,750; non-scale monthly wages +3.5%, minimum ISK 23,750; December bonus for 2026 ISK 114,000 for full-time work). DO NOT SERVE AS FACT and do not treat as a statutory minimum: aggregator sources put the 'lágmarkstekjur fyrir fullt starf' (contractual minimum income for full-time work) under the general agreement at roughly ISK 513,000-515,000 per month from 1 January 2026; the exact figure was NOT confirmable from an official/party source at the time of checking — SA's lágmarkstekjur page (https://www.sa.is/vinnumarkadsvefur/starfsmannamal/laun-og-launakostnadur/lagmarkstekjur) returned HTTP 500. Even once verified, that number is a contract term between SGS/ASÍ and SA, applicable only within that agreement's scope, and is NOT a national statutory minimum wage. There is therefore no effective_from date for this series.
