Headline consumer price inflation — the twelve-month change in the vísitala neysluverðs (consumer price index) published by Hagstofa Íslands (Statistics Iceland), the official statistics producer. The CPI is compiled from prices collected in the first half of each month and released near the END of that same month, so Iceland publishes its inflation number faster than most of Europe. The index base is May 1988 = 100. The Central Bank's inflation target is 2.5% measured on this index.

What this value means
12-month CPI rate, July 2026, up from 5.1% in June. PUBLICATION TIMING IS UNUSUAL: Iceland compiles the index in the MIDDLE of the reference month and publishes before that month ends, so Icelandic CPI is current earlier than almost any other series in this dataset - do not assume the usual one-month lag. WHICH NUMBER THIS IS: the headline CPI. The same release states that 'the CPI less housing cost is 4.8% higher than one year ago', and Statistics Iceland publishes that variant (CPILH) alongside the headline in the same tables. Housing is a large and volatile part of the Icelandic basket, so the two diverge materially - 5.3% against 4.8% this month - and quoting CPILH as Iceland's inflation rate is a common error. Also avoid the 'annualized rate' columns in VIS01000 (A_rate_M, A_rate_3M): those annualise a single month or a quarter and are not the year-on-year figure. HISTORY: monthly observations from 2023-06 onward were backfilled on 2026-08-03 from table VIS01000, each row citing that table. The feed was required to reproduce the value we already served for June 2026 before any historical row was accepted.
