What this value means
13 statutory Feiertage in 2026. The list is CLOSED and enumerated verbatim in § 7 Abs. 2 ARG, loaded from RIS on 2026-07-22: '1. Jänner (Neujahr), 6. Jänner (Heilige Drei Könige), Ostermontag, 1. Mai (Staatsfeiertag), Christi Himmelfahrt, Pfingstmontag, Fronleichnam, 15. August (Mariä Himmelfahrt), 26. Oktober (Nationalfeiertag), 1. November (Allerheiligen), 8. Dezember (Mariä Empfängnis), 25. Dezember (Weihnachten), 26. Dezember (Stephanstag).' Four of the thirteen are movable and computed from Easter Sunday (5 April 2026, computus-fixed): Easter Monday = Easter + 1 = 6 April; Ascension = Easter + 39 = 14 May; Whit Monday = Easter + 50 = 25 May; Corpus Christi = Easter + 60 = 4 June. Every weekday assignment below was computed, not copied. UNLIKE THE NETHERLANDS, THESE CARRY A STATUTORY PAID ENTITLEMENT. § 7 Abs. 1 ARG gives the employee an unbroken rest period of at least 24 hours starting between 00:00 and 06:00 on the Feiertag, and § 9 ARG preserves the full pay that would have been earned (Feiertagsentgelt); an employee who works during the Feiertagsruhe is additionally entitled to pay for the hours worked (§ 9 Abs. 5), i.e. double pay, unless time off in lieu of at least one calendar day or 36 hours is agreed (§ 7 Abs. 6). NO MONDAYISATION, NO SUBSTITUTION, NO COMPENSATION DAY. Austrian law contains no rule moving a Feiertag off a weekend. § 7 Abs. 7 ARG says only that where a Feiertag falls on a Sunday, the ordinary weekly-rest provisions (§§ 3 to 5) apply — that is a rest-period rule, not a substitute holiday. Applied to 2026, THREE of the thirteen fall on non-working days and are simply lost: Mariä Himmelfahrt 15 August is a SATURDAY, Allerheiligen 1 November is a SUNDAY, and Stephanstag 26 December is a SATURDAY. The remaining ten fall on weekdays: 1 January Thursday, 6 January Tuesday, 6 April Monday, 1 May Friday, 14 May Thursday, 25 May Monday, 4 June Thursday, 26 October Monday, 8 December Tuesday, 25 December Friday. 2026 is therefore a relatively weak holiday year in Austria. GOOD FRIDAY IS NOT A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN AUSTRIA AND HAS NOT BEEN SINCE 2019 — this is the single most common error in Austrian holiday data. The Court of Justice held in Case C-193/17 Cresco Investigation GmbH v Markus Achatzi, judgment of 22 January 2019 (Grand Chamber), that granting Good Friday as a paid holiday only to members of certain churches was direct discrimination on grounds of religion contrary to Directive 2000/78/EC and Article 21 of the Charter. Austria responded by REPEALING § 7 Abs. 3 outright (Art. 1 Z 2, BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019) rather than extending it, so Good Friday (3 April 2026, a Friday) is now an ordinary working day for everyone. In its place BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019 inserted § 7a ARG, the 'persönlicher Feiertag': once per holiday year an employee may unilaterally fix the date of ONE DAY OF EXISTING ANNUAL LEAVE, giving three months' written notice; if the employer then asks the employee to work that day, the employee keeps the leave day and receives double pay. THIS IS NOT AN EXTRA DAY OFF — it is drawn from the statutory leave entitlement — and it must never be added to this list as a 14th holiday. SCOPE CAVEAT. The ARG does not cover everyone: § 1 Abs. 2 excludes employees of territorial authorities and municipal associations (except those working in their commercial undertakings), certain scheduled-bus-service employees subject to mandatory service regulations, close relatives of the employer and senior managers whose working time is unmeasured or self-determined, and teaching and educational staff, plus groups governed by separate statutes (notably agricultural and forestry workers under the Landarbeitsgesetz). Public servants' holiday entitlement follows their own service law, and the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957 governs parallel ground. The thirteen DATES are nonetheless the nationally recognised Feiertage; only the ARG entitlement mechanism has these carve-outs. § 7a Abs. 3 expressly extends the persönlicher Feiertag to several of the otherwise-excluded groups. DELIBERATE EXCLUSIONS: (1) LANDESPATRONE — the patron-saint days of the nine Bundesländer (19 March St Joseph in Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg; 4 May St Florian in Upper Austria; 24 September St Rupert in Salzburg; 11 November St Martin in Burgenland; 15 November St Leopold in Vienna and Lower Austria) are NOT in § 7 Abs. 2 ARG. They are days off for provincial public servants and schools by provincial arrangement and confer no general private-sector entitlement, so they cannot be served as national data. (2) 24 December (Heiliger Abend) and 31 December (Silvester) are NOT statutory Feiertage; most collective agreements make them free or half-days, which is contractual, not statutory. (3) Karfreitag, for the reasons above. (4) Aschermittwoch, Karsamstag and Allerseelen (2 November) are not Feiertage. No date on this list is provisional and no Austrian holiday legislation with 2026 effect was found; the § 7 text in force is unchanged since 22 March 2019. ACCESS QUIRK: ris.bka.gv.at returns HTTP 503 to fetchers without a browser User-Agent, and duplicates every sentence in a screen-reader expansion ('Absatz 2,' after '(2)'). 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-29): the 2027 dates are the permanent statutory holiday calendar carried forward — fixed-date holidays keep their date and Easter-linked holidays are computed for Easter Sunday 28 March 2027. This country applies no automatic weekend substitution, so holidays falling on a weekend are not moved. One-off holidays proclaimed for 2027 (if any) are not included; re-verify against the official source near-year.
