What this value means
June 2026: VPI +3.2% year-on-year; index level 103.1 on the VPI 2025=100 base; month-on-month change 0.0% ('blieb das durchschnittliche Preisniveau im Juni unverändert'). Down from +3.7% in May 2026. The definitive release of 17 July 2026 confirmed the flash estimate published at the start of July. VPI vs HVPI — TWO DIFFERENT SERIES THAT HAPPEN TO COINCIDE THIS MONTH: the EU-harmonised HVPI 2025 also read +3.2% y/y in June (index 102.98; May revised to 103.24, HVPI May rate +3.7%), and Statistik Austria states explicitly that weighting differences between VPI and HVPI produced divergent rates in individual expenditure groups which happened to net out overall. DO NOT infer that the two series are interchangeable — in most months they differ. The national VPI is the domestic legal-reference index used for statutory value-maintenance (Wertsicherung), rent indexation and the § 33a EStG cold-progression calculation; the HVPI is what Eurostat and the ECB use for euro area comparison. INDEX BASE CHANGED IN 2026: from January 2026 both indices are published on a 2025=100 base with a revised basket and the COICOP 2018 / ECOICOP v2 classification, replacing the 2020=100 base. Year-on-year RATES are continuous across the break and the history below is comparable, but index LEVELS before 2026 are on a different base and must be chain-linked before use. JUNE DRIVERS, from the release: transport remained the largest contributor at +6.5% y/y (+0.93pp) but decelerated sharply from May's +8.8% as motor fuels slowed to +16.3% from +26.5%; housing/water/energy +3.0% (+0.63pp) with household energy actually falling 0.4% y/y as heating oil decelerated to +32.6% from +53.7% and electricity stayed deeply negative at -10.2% (-0.26pp) on the January 2026 cuts to the Elektrizitätsabgabe and the Erneuerbaren-Förderbeitrag, reinforced from April 2026 by an ORF-fee social tariff for exempt households and a summer grid tariff giving a 20% network-charge reduction between 11:00 and 16:00 through September; food and non-alcoholic beverages slowed to +1.3% (+0.15pp) from +2.2%; restaurants and accommodation +4.5% (+0.57pp); health +4.4% (+0.25pp); rents including new lettings +5.0%. Services remain the dominant contributor. Month on month the largest upward push was package holidays (+10.1%) and the largest drag motor fuels (-6.1%). FORWARD-LOOKING CAVEAT: the new 4.9% VAT rate on basic foodstuffs took effect on 1 July 2026 (see the vat series), so the July 2026 print — due at the end of July as a flash estimate and around 17 August as definitive — will contain a one-off mechanical downward shift in food prices to the extent the cut is passed through. Do not read that as underlying disinflation. PUBLICATION CADENCE: Statistik Austria issues a Schnellschätzung (flash estimate) around the 1st of the following month and the definitive figure around the 17th; the value served here is definitive.
