What this value means

CYPRUS USES ORTHODOX EASTER, not Western: Orthodox Pascha is 12 April 2026 and 2 MAY 2027, and the movable days are computed from it - Green Monday at minus 48 days, Good Friday minus 2, Easter Monday plus 1, and Holy Spirit Monday / Kataklysmos plus 50. Cyprus does NOT substitute weekend-falling holidays; no Cypriot provision transfers them, and the Banking Holidays Law enumerates bank holidays with no transfer clause. 2027 is unusually costly: four holidays fall on a weekend and none is compensated, and 1 May 2027 is simultaneously Labour Day and Orthodox Holy Saturday. DELIBERATE EXCLUSION: Orthodox EASTER TUESDAY (14 April 2026, 4 May 2027) is NOT listed, because it is a banks and schools day only - the Republic's official public-service closure list has 15 entries and excludes it, which is exactly the count served here for each year. Two further sector cautions: Christmas Eve is listed because the public service closes, but BANKS ARE OPEN that day; and Holy Saturday is not a public holiday at all, despite frequently appearing on tourist calendars. FINALLY, AND IMPORTANTLY FOR PRIVATE-SECTOR USE: paid public holidays are not fully statutory in the Cypriot private sector - entitlement arises from the contract or collective agreement - so a holiday flag from this API must not be read as a private-sector paid-leave entitlement. AUTHORITY PENDING for 2027: the dates are deterministic, but the Council of Ministers public-service decision and the Central Bank's bank-holiday circular for 2027 are normally issued late in the preceding year and do not yet exist.
