What this value means
This is the GENERAL statutory rate — the νόμιμος τόκος / τόκος υπερημερίας that a debtor owes on any money obligation once in default (Αστικός Κώδικας arts. 340 and 345), civil and commercial alike outside the Late Payment Directive. Greece has no fixed figure and no periodic fixing: the pre-euro ceiling set by the Bank of Greece was converted by ν. 2842/2000 art. 3(2) into a reference to the corresponding ECB rate, so the rate moves the day a new ECB main refinancing rate takes effect. The Bank of Greece publishes the resulting figures as its 'non-bank contractual interest rates' table, whose two columns are the maximum permissible AGREED rate (ECB MRO + 5.25) and the maximum permissible DEFAULT rate (ECB MRO + 7.25) — the default column has sat exactly two points above the contractual column since 1946. At the ECB MRO of 2.40% in force from 17 June 2026 that gives 7.65% and 9.65% respectively. THE RATE STEPS UP ONCE SUIT IS BROUGHT: under Αστικός Κώδικας art. 346, as replaced by art. 2 of ν. 4055/2012, from service of the claim or of the payment order the debtor owes τόκος επιδικίας, two percentage points above the default rate — 11.65% on current figures. DO NOT USE FOR B2B COMMERCIAL DEBTS: late payment in commercial transactions is governed by π.δ. 166/2003 as amended by ν. 4152/2013 (the Late Payment Directive), whose rate is the ECB reference rate + 8 percentage points fixed for each half-year — served separately as this API's late-payment-interest product. Because the directive rate is a HALF-YEARLY SNAPSHOT and this rate is CONTINUOUS, the two diverge for months at a time; picking the wrong one is the most common error on Greek claims. TWO FURTHER CARVE-OUTS: debts owed BY the Greek State and by public-law legal entities run on their own, materially lower statutory regime (ν.δ. 496/1974 art. 21, as replaced by art. 45 of ν. 4607/2019), not on this rate; and the contractual-max column is a usury ceiling on agreed interest, not a rate a creditor may claim. Retrieval note: bankofgreece.gr sits behind an Akamai edge that returns 403 to automated fetchers — the table must be read in a real browser. Derived live from this API's ECB MRO series.
