What this value means

June 2026 CPI +3.4% year-on-year, down from +3.6% in the 12 months to May 2026; month-on-month +0.3%. Read directly from the CSO release on 2026-07-22. This is the FULL, FINAL CPI release — the CSO does not publish a provisional CPI; the end-of-month flash estimate (published 30 June 2026 for June) covers the HICP ONLY, so a flash figure and a CPI figure are never the same series. Core inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food was +2.9%. Largest 12-month divisional increases: Education Services +8.9%, Housing/Water/Electricity/Gas & Other Fuels +7.3%, Clothing & Footwear +7.0%, Insurance & Financial Services +5.7%; the only division to fall was Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance at -0.1%. Largest monthly movers: Recreation, Sport & Culture +4.3% and Housing/Utilities +0.6% up, Clothing & Footwear -0.9% and Transport -0.8% down. CPI vs HICP — DIFFERENT SERIES, DO NOT MIX: Irish HICP was +3.2% in June 2026 against CPI +3.4%. The principal Irish-specific difference is that the national CPI INCLUDES MORTGAGE INTEREST while the HICP excludes it (both exclude owner-occupier house prices). In a rate-moving environment the gap can be large and can flip sign; the two series were identical at 3.6% in March 2026 and 0.2pp apart in June. Eurostat, the ECB and euro-area comparisons use HICP; Irish domestic indexation, contracts, rent-review clauses and most public commentary use the national CPI, which is the series served here. INDEX BASE: December 2023 = 100 (the CSO also continues to publish a December 2016 = 100 column for continuity), so index LEVELS from different base periods are not comparable even though the year-on-year rates served here are. IRISH-SPECIFIC 2026 DISTORTION TO WATCH: the VAT cut on restaurant/catering food and hairdressing from 13.5% to 9% took effect 1 July 2026, which will mechanically depress those components from the JULY 2026 index onward — it does not affect the June figure served here. Release cadence: HICP flash estimate around the last working day of the reference month, full CPI release around the 9th-11th of the following month. The July 2026 CPI was not yet published as at 2026-07-22. ACCESS QUIRK: the CSO release page is HTML and fetches cleanly, but the headline CPI/HICP series is embedded in a Highcharts data table (div id 621788datatable) rather than plain prose — extract the table, not the narrative, if you need the monthly history.
