What this value means

June 2026 DEFINITIVE: NIC +3.0% year-on-year, 0.0% month-on-month ('variazione congiunturale nulla'), decelerating from +3.2% in May; the definitive release of 16 July 2026 confirmed the provisional flash estimate. This is the NIC (national index for the whole resident population, gross of tobacco) — the domestic legal-reference index used for rent and alimony indexation and for statutory revaluations. IT IS NOT THE SAME as the two other ISTAT consumer indices: (a) IPCA/HICP, the EU-harmonised index used for euro-area comparison and for the CCNL renewal mechanism, which reads differently every month (e.g. April 2026 IPCA +2.8% vs NIC +2.7%; March 2026 IPCA +1.5% vs NIC +1.7%) because of differing treatment of promotional prices, health-care co-payments and weights; and (b) FOI, the index for households of blue- and white-collar workers, used for TFR severance revaluation. Serving the wrong one is a common error — this series is NIC. DRIVERS: the June deceleration came from unprocessed food (+5.5% to +4.4%), recreational/cultural/personal-care services (+3.0% to +2.7%) and transport services (+1.7% to +1.1%), while energy kept accelerating — non-regulated +12.5% to +13.3% y/y and regulated +5.6% to +9.2% y/y. Core inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food eased to +1.6% (from +1.7%), i.e. the headline is roughly double the underlying rate; the run-up from +1.5% in February to the 3% range is almost entirely energy. ISTAT publishes a provisional (provvisorio) flash estimate at end-month and a definitive figure around the 15th-16th of the following month; the value above is definitive. July 2026 data is not yet published as of last_confirmed — the provisional July release is due 31 July 2026. Access quirk: ISTAT press releases exist in parallel Italian and English URL trees, and the provisional release sits at a DIFFERENT slug ('/comunicato-stampa/prezzi-al-consumo-dati-provvisori-giugno-2026/') from the definitive one — do not confuse them. Detailed tables are PDF-only and image-heavy so text extraction frequently fails; use the HTML comunicato-stampa page.
