What this value means
STRUCTURAL: Italy has no independent policy rate. Banca d'Italia is part of the Eurosystem and does not set rates; the Governing Council of the ECB sets a single rate for all 20 euro-area members. Since the March 2024 operational framework review the ECB steers the stance through the DEPOSIT FACILITY RATE, which is the rate served here. The two other key rates on the same date are MRO 2.40% and marginal lending facility 2.65% — do not confuse them with the stance rate. The 11 June 2026 decision was a 25bp RAISE from 2.00% (the level held since 11 June 2025), the first increase in this cycle after the 2024-25 easing sequence; the ECB press release of 11 June 2026 raised all three key rates by 25bp with effect from 17 June 2026, citing Middle East conflict-driven energy inflation, with staff projections of 3.0% headline for 2026. This value and effective_from are identical to the German (DE) and French (FR) files by construction — a divergence between euro-area country files would be a data error. Effective dates follow the settlement of the first main refinancing operation after the decision, not the decision date itself, which is why 11 June (decision) and 17 June (effective) differ. ECB UPDATE (verified 2026-08-22): the Governing Council HELD on 23-24 July 2026 - deposit facility 2.25%, MRO 2.40%, marginal lending 2.65%, all unchanged and in effect since 17 June 2026 ('decided to keep the three key ECB interest rates unchanged'). Next monetary-policy meeting: 9-10 September 2026 (Berlin; decision 14:15 CET on the 10th), then 28-29 Oct and 16-17 Dec. A change takes effect from the start of the following reserve maintenance period - this series uses the EFFECTIVE date.
