What this value means
One rate for money claims across property law, civil and commercial alike: reference rate 2.00% plus 8 percentage points = 10.00% from 1 July 2026. Setter: the Riksbank fixes the reference rate by a separate decision for each calendar half-year; the 8-point addition is in the statute and does not change. TWO TRAPS IN 9 §: (1) ROUNDING IS UPWARD — the reference rate is the Riksbank's rate at the main refinancing operation held immediately before the half-year, rounded up to the next HALF percentage point, so a policy rate of 1.75% produces a reference rate of 2.00% and a statutory rate of 10.00%, not 9.75%. Never compute the statutory rate as policy rate plus 8. (2) HALF-YEARLY SNAPSHOT — a Riksbank policy move inside the half-year does not touch the statutory rate; it waits for the next fixing. TWO OTHER RATES IN THE SAME ACT: 5 § charges only reference rate plus TWO points (avkastningsränta) for the period before the debt falls into default, for instance on restitution of a payment; and 6 § first paragraph second sentence cuts the addition to TWO points on personal-injury damages, for the time until benefits deductible under 5 kap. 3 § 1 skadeståndslagen are finally determined. Commercial invoices: Sweden implements the EU Late Payment Directive inside räntelagen itself, so the PERCENTAGE is the same 10.00%, but 6 § second paragraph (Lag 2013:55) makes a lower contractual rate ineffective against a trader supplying a public authority, and the separate statutory compensation for recovery costs applies — that regime is served in our late-payment-interest product. NEXT FIXING: decided on the last banking day before 1 January 2027 and effective 1 January 2027.
