What this value means

Finland's general default rate on money debts — the one that applies to consumer and other civil debts, and the rate a court awards on a judgment sum: reference rate 2.5% plus the 7 percentage points in korkolaki 4 § = 9.5% for 1 July to 31 December 2026. Setter: the reference rate is announced by Suomen Pankki for each half-year and published in the Finnish statute series; the 7-point addition is in the Act and does not change. TWO TRAPS IN 12 §: (1) ROUNDING IS UPWARD to the next HALF percentage point — the ECB main refinancing rate before 1 July 2026 was 2.40%, which rounds up to a reference rate of 2.50%, so the statutory rate is 9.50% and not 9.40%. Never compute it as the ECB rate plus 7. (2) HALF-YEARLY SNAPSHOT — the rate is taken from the last ECB main refinancing operation before the first calendar day of the half-year and does not move if the ECB moves inside the period. Under 11 § a court may moderate the default interest where the debtor's payment failure is due to illness, unemployment or a comparable cause. Commercial invoices are a separate product: korkolaki 4 a § gives EIGHT percentage points over the same reference rate on kaupalliset sopimukset — 10.5% for this half-year, alongside the statutory recovery compensation — and that regime is served in our late-payment-interest product. NEXT FIXING: announced by Suomen Pankki in late December 2026 for the period 1 January to 30 June 2027.
