What this value means
June 2026 CPI inflation 2.9% year-on-year, down from 3.5% in May 2026; the month-on-month change was -0.6%. Independently confirmed on 2026-07-20 against both the CBS flash-estimate release (nieuws/2026/27) and the full release (nieuws/2026/28). This is the latest available period — CBS publishes a flash estimate (snelle raming) around the 1st of the following month and the final figure around the 7th; the June flash estimate was also 2.9%, so the figure is final. Main drag: motor fuels, up 17.3% y/y in June (a clear deceleration from May), plus accommodation prices. CPI vs HICP — THESE ARE DIFFERENT SERIES AND MUST NOT BE MIXED: the national CPI was 2.9% in June while the EU-harmonised HICP for the Netherlands was 2.5% (down from 3.4% in May); euro area HICP was higher than the Dutch HICP in June. The gap is structural, not noise: the national CPI includes the cost of owner-occupied housing (imputed via rental price development), which the HICP excludes. Eurostat, the ECB and cross-country euro area comparisons use HICP; Dutch statutory indexation, wage bargaining and most domestic contracts reference the national CPI. INDEX BASE CHANGED: from January 2026 the CPI is published on a 2025=100 base (previously 2015=100), with a revised expenditure basket; year-on-year rates were reconstructed on the new base, so index LEVELS from before 2026 are not directly comparable although the y/y rates served here are. Note one further Dutch-specific 2026 distortion: the 9%-to-21% VAT increase on lodging effective 1 January 2026 mechanically lifted accommodation prices in the index from January.
