What this value means

June 2026 national CPI inflation 3.40% year-on-year, down from 4.08% in May 2026. The index itself stood at 102.95 points on the 2025 = 100 base and FELL 0.31 points month on month (-0.30%). Health index 102.59 points, health-index inflation 2.99% (from 3.48% in May). Largest upward contributions: electricity (+0.080 index points), private rents (+0.040), holiday packages (+0.030) and natural gas (+0.030); largest downward contributions: motor fuels (-0.220), airline tickets (-0.160), holiday villages and camping (-0.055) and clothing (-0.040). BELGIUM PUBLISHES AT THE END OF THE REFERENCE MONTH, NOT THE FOLLOWING MONTH — the June figure was published on 29 June 2026 and the July figure is due at the end of July 2026. This is unlike almost every other euro area member and it means the 'latest available month' for Belgium is normally one month ahead of the latest available month for France, Italy or the Netherlands; a pipeline that assumes a one-month publication lag will systematically look for the wrong release. There is also no separate flash estimate to reconcile: the figure published at month-end is the figure. THREE DIFFERENT BELGIAN INDICES, DO NOT MIX THEM: (a) the CPI served here, the headline national index; (b) the INDICE SANTÉ / gezondheidsindex, the CPI excluding alcoholic beverages, tobacco and motor fuels, which is the index that actually governs wage indexation, rent indexation and social benefits in Belgium — it read 102.59 in June, a different number from the CPI's 102.95; and (c) the SMOOTHED health index (indice santé lissé), a four-month moving average of the health index carrying the multiplier retained from the 2015 index jump, which is the series compared against the pivot index. In June 2026 the smoothed health index reached 100.37 against a pivot of 100.28, so the pivot was crossed; Statbel's release states that social benefits, pensions and public-sector salaries will consequently be indexed in SEPTEMBER 2026, and the next pivot index is 102.29. The private-sector minimum wage moved earlier, on 1 July 2026 (see the minimum-wage series). Serving the CPI where a consumer needs the health index — or vice versa — is the classic Belgian error; the exact construction of the smoothed index (averaging window and the 2015-jump coefficient) is described here from Statbel's published values and was not re-derived arithmetically in this pass. CPI vs HICP: the EU-harmonised index for Belgium read 3.3% year-on-year in June 2026 (published 15 July 2026, -0.1% month on month), against 4.0% in May on the harmonised measure; core inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food eased to 2.7% from 2.9%. Eurostat and the ECB use the HICP; Belgian domestic indexation uses the health index; this series is the national CPI. REBASING — INDEX LEVELS BEFORE 2026 ARE NOT COMPARABLE: from January 2026 the CPI moved from base 2013 = 100 to base 2025 = 100 and adopted the ECOICOP V2 classification required by EU regulation, taking the number of main groups from 12 to 13; historical series were reconstructed back to January 2006 and Statbel states the rebasing has no effect on measured inflation, so the year-on-year rates served here remain comparable across the break while the index LEVELS do not.
