What this value means
Headline national VPI, +2.3% year-on-year in June 2026 - the final (confirmed) reading, matching the flash estimate of end-June 2026 (Pressemitteilung Nr. 229). Month-on-month, consumer prices FELL 0.3% versus May 2026. Core inflation excluding food and energy was +2.5%, i.e. ABOVE the headline. Energy prices were +3.4% y/y and remained the dominant driver, though a smaller increase than the previous month, which is what pulled the headline down from +2.6% in May. Food was +0.4%. WHICH INDEX: the value served is the NATIONAL Verbraucherpreisindex fuer Deutschland (VPI), the legally relevant index for German indexation clauses, rent adjustment and Wertsicherungsklauseln. Destatis separately publishes a Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HVPI / HICP) used in the euro-area aggregate by the ECB; the HVPI uses a different basket treatment (notably owner-occupied housing and health/education weights) and its German y/y rate routinely differs from the VPI by a few tenths in either direction - do not treat the two as interchangeable. Destatis also flagged a methodological change to the HVPI from January 2026, which does not affect the VPI series served here. Note that the March 2026 releases were formally CORRECTED by Destatis (Pressemitteilungen Nr. 108 and Nr. 127 both carry a KORREKTUR prefix, the correction issued on 1 July 2026 and arising from a calculation error in the HVPI) - the VPI figure of +2.7% is what appears in history below.
