What this value means

Headline national IPC, +3.2% year-on-year in June 2026 (final result, released 10 July 2026), down 0.1 percentage point from May 2026. Month-on-month the index rose 0.1%. Underlying inflation (total index excluding unprocessed food and energy) was +2.5%, i.e. BELOW the headline, and actually rose from +2.2% in May - the headline fell only because of energy: energy products decelerated sharply to +9.1% y/y (from +13.1% in May) as fuel prices dropped, and unprocessed food eased to +5.1% (from +5.7%). The 12-month moving-average rate was +2.6%. WHICH INDEX: the value served is the NATIONAL IPC (Indice de Precos no Consumidor), the legally relevant index for Portuguese indexation, rent updating (coeficiente de atualizacao de rendas) and contractual escalation. INE separately publishes a Harmonised Index (IHPC / HICP) used by the ECB in the euro-area aggregate, which uses a different basket treatment and whose Portuguese y/y rate routinely differs from the IPC by a few tenths - do not treat the two as interchangeable. Portugal's headline (3.2%) runs well above the euro-area average and above Germany's, reflecting stronger energy and food dynamics. Access: the INE IPC theme page (tema 1314) served the destaque cleanly; INE also publishes durable per-release PDF destaques via ngt_server attach URLs.
