What this value means
Art. 139 alin. (1) lists 17 statutory holidays, but 2026 has only 16 DISTINCT non-working DATES because 1 June is simultaneously the second day of Rusalii and Ziua Copilului. ORTHODOX EASTER 2026 IS 12 APRIL — one week after Western Easter (5 April); Vinerea Mare is the last Friday before Easter (10 April) and Rusalii is 49/50 days after Easter (31 May / 1 June). Getting this wrong by a week is the standard failure mode for Romania. Eleven of the sixteen dates fall on working days; five fall on a weekend with NO statutory transfer to a Monday — Romania has no automatic substitute-day rule: 24 January (Sat), 12 April (Sun), 31 May (Sun), 15 August (Sat) and 26 December (Sat). Separately from Art. 139, the Government may declare ad-hoc bridge days ('punţi') by hotărâre for public-sector staff only; those are not statutory holidays for the private sector and are not listed here. Art. 139 alin. (1) also grants two days for each of the three annual religious feasts declared by legally recognised NON-Christian cults, to persons belonging to those cults — a per-employee entitlement with no fixed calendar dates, so it cannot be enumerated. Work on a statutory holiday that cannot be compensated with time off attracts a pay increase of at least 100% of the base salary (Art. 142 alin. (2)). ACCESS NOTE: the authoritative consolidated text at legislatie.just.ro was unreachable from this location; the Inspecţia Muncii PDF used here is an official labour-inspectorate publication but its consolidation stamp reads 'valabilă de la 9 martie 2023 până la 22 martie 2023' — i.e. it is a stale snapshot. Art. 139 has not been amended since Legea 52/2023 (checked at confirmation), so the list is current, but a fresher official consolidation should be substituted when Portal Legislativ is reachable. 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-30): the 17 statutory days of Art. 139 of the Codul muncii (Legea 53/2003, as amended by Legea 153/2019), with the Orthodox-Easter-relative days computed for Orthodox Pascha 2 May 2027 — Good Friday 30 April, Easter Sunday 2 May, Easter Monday 3 May, Pentecost 20 June and Whit Monday 21 June. Note that Whit Monday and Children's Day shared a single entry in 2026 because both fell on 1 June; in 2027 they are separate days and are listed separately. Art. 139 provides NO compensatory day when a holiday falls on a weekend, and in 2027 eight of the seventeen do (2 and 24 January, 1 and 2 May, 20 June, 15 August, 25 and 26 December). Verification note: all official Romanian sources (codulmuncii.ro, legislatie.just.ro, lege5.ro) refused automated reads on 2026-07-30; the article text was cross-checked against two independent Romanian legal databases that agreed.
